Dan Oakley is a professional dark sky expert and founding director of Darkscape Consulting. He has long experience of working in dark skies and is passionate about providing services to protect our connection the cosmos for people and our planet.
Dan served as the Dark Sky Officer for the South Downs National Park Authority for over 10 years and was responsible for creating and producing all aspects of the South Downs IDA International Dark Sky "Moore's" Reserve application. He was the principal in-house planning consultant and authored the planning policies and technical guidance material.
Dan currently sits as the chair of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) Places committee, is a founder member of the IDA-UK chapter and a registered IDA advocate. He also established and currently coordinates the UK Dark Skies Partnership which is an organisation committed to reducing pollution. It includes protected landscapes, local authorities, professional lighting institutions, astronomical societies and other dark sky organisations.
Dan has a BSc in Physics, a Fd.Sc in Wildlife Management and a Masters in Environment, Policy and Society. He has also been awarded the IDA Dark Sky Defender award and received awards from the Commision for Dark Skies.
